10 Ways to Help Prevent Skin Disease

Tips for you and your pet

  1. Always practice diligent flea control on your pet and in your pet's environment.
  2. Bathe your pet regularly, using shampoo recommeded by your veterinarian.
  3. Feed high quality food intended for pets only.
  4. Do not change your pet's diet often, attempting to find out if he/she has a food allergy; this makes finding a true food allergy very difficult.
  5. Keep pets  with lightly pigmented skin out of the sun or use a topical sunscreen as recommended by your veterinarian.
  6. Administer topical products and oral medications only as prescribed by a veterinarian.
  7. Certain breeds are more prone to skin disease.  Do your homework before acquiring a new pet.
  8. Be aware of changes such as dry flaky coat, red smelly ears, and frequent itching and chewing.  Contact your veterinarian before a small problem becomes a large one.
  9. Take your pet to your family veterinarian for regular checkups.
  10. Always consult with your family veterinarian first, but should your pet's condition worsen or not improve, ask for additional help or referral to a specialist.
